God: The “self help” industry has it all wrong.
Me: Self help? This has something to do with the meaning of life?
God: Yes, you see self help makes money by offering people the hope of feeling better about themselves. And they may indeed do it for a little while because when the person first buys the book they get a little jolt of hope, “Ah, here’s the answer, here’s the way to improve my life.”
Me: I feel a "but" coming.
God: But that feeling is temporary and sooner than later the person realizes after reading the self help book they still aren’t feeling quite right and so they buy another self help book, get another little whiff of hope. People become addicted to self help books, seeking that little fix of hope. And certainly every self help book, just like the bible, has a little bit of the truth, just enough for people to buy into it, but not enough to change them.
Me: Okay, so what’s the answer?
God: You can’t change.
Me: Excuse me?
God: You are who you are.
Me: So if you don’t like who you are, or if you’re not happy, just suffer through it?
God: If you’re not happy, it’s not about changing who you are, it’s about changing your environment. If you can find the environment you thrive in you will be happy and you will no longer seek the meaning of life. You only seek the meaning of life because the enviroment you are living in has no meaning for you.
Me: Interesting...
God: But changing your life is hard and people would rather just read a book that hopefully changes them instead of their environment. It’s why people drink, and seek escape through books and movies. Your entire culture is trying to seek escape from an environment you aren’t meant to be in. But you know what happens to the people who find their enviornment?
Me: What?
God: They suddenly like themselves. They suddenly see how they were meant to fit into this life, they start firing on all cylinders.
Me: So why are so many people unhappy?
God: It’s that God damn Christian work ethic. Leaders, industry, and rich people need the “peasants” not to kill themselves?
Me: Excuse me?
God: Modern states need people as fodder for war, for factories, as consumers, and so they developed what you now call the Christian work ethic. The society shames people into living and working in environments that make them feel horrible. And if you complain you're a weakling and told to suck it up, it’s your duty. That’s all bullshit.
Me: Please don't swear.
God: Sorry, but it makes me angry. All the wasted human potential. It’s why people feel life has no meaning, or that they’re simply existing. Your society should be doing everything it can to help people find the environment, the work, that is best suited for them. But instead you’ve created a society that forces round pegs into square holes. People want to live, people want to thrive, if you helped them your society would be the most incredible and exciting place you can imagine. But instead, you’ve turned your society over to short-sighted leaders and the greedy who are so busy trying to preserve their power, and wealth, and the status quo, that they can't be bothered trying to improve your society. Most people only live their potential through fiction, or trying to deaden the pain with drugs.
