God: I pre-empt disaster.

God: You see, the human concept of time again confuses you. You get cancer at the age of fifty and then you begin to pray for me to help you.
Me: And frankly, those prayers often go unanswered.
God: What you don’t realize is I also stopped you from getting cancer at the age of twenty before you even knew you had it. If you knew when I was was doing my job it would already be too late.
Me: Hmmm, well, that’s kind of interesting. So you stop things from happening before we even know the problem exists?
God: Yes.
Me: Easy to say. But so why is there so much pain and suffering still?
God: What is the absence of pain and suffering?
Me: Happiness?
God: Stasis.
Me: Stasis?
God: If you really think about it, if you tried to eliminate pain and suffering the same people would have to exist for ever, yes? Because death involves pain and grief so you’d have to get rid of that. And you couldn’t have kids because if no one died where would you all live? There is such a thing as physical reality, finite space. So, many of the very things you treasure about life would have to be eliminated: children, adventure, exploration, knowledge. Virtually everything you love carries with it a price, a certain amount of suffering and pain. Would you truly give up all that so you could live happily for ever after in an unchanging enviroment?
Me: It actually sounds pretty bad.
God: Exactly, your safety and continued happiness would itself become a misery. Happiness and misery are integral parts, they exist together, always, and one cannot exist with out the other.
Me: But we still can have some safety? I mean it’s where you draw your line isn’t it? We’ve made some things safer, cured some diseases.
God: But you don’t know what you’ve lost by doing so either. Choice changes everything. There are people who fight to make everything safe, but there is a line, and once they cross it even they will regret it.
Me: Are you saying we shouldn’t strive to change things? Make things better?
God: Ask ten people a question and you’ll often get ten different answers. Diversity is built into you for a reason. People all over the world are trying different things, and the most succesfull solution will spread and you will all benefit. So there’s nothing wrong with some people trying to make the world a safer place by legislating bicycle helmets and no peanuts in schools, but if they were to take over the world you would all suffer horrible consequences that you cannot begin to imagine.
Me: So diversity...
God: Diversity, is about making mistakes as well. If people stop making mistakes you are doomed. Even re-inventing the wheel is important. You know, it’s why all great nations fall apart because they begin to think they’re the best in the world and everyone should be doing things the same way they are. When you get to that point, innovation and new ideas die, then when a disaster strikes that is outside of your experience, no one knows how to deal with it. The hero, the coward, the builder, the destroyer, the leader, the follower, they all play a vital part in humanity. Each is called to the front-lines as required.
Me: We need cowards?
God: Some dangers in this world you can’t fight, they will destroy you, and you need to run away. If everyone was a hero you’d all stay and be destroyed.
Me: We even need criminals?
God: One man’s criminal is another man’s hero. In Britain’s eyes the American revolutionaries were criminals. Just as today Americans view terrorists as criminals.
Me: Woah, you’re saying terrorists are okay?
God: Terrorists are an integral part of the whole. They are answering a question you should be asking about your society. Terrorists will cause a healthy society to grow stronger and a flawed society to fall apart.

God: Every single one of you is a step towards the future. And everything every one does has profound implications and affect on what will happen to the human species, though you may never realize it. This is what people have the hardest time grasping. The holy trinity is really, the past, the present, and the future. They exist as one and are humanity’s endless step towards “being”. People are so quick to judge, but even ignorance is a crucial part of knowledge. Like pain and suffering, ignorance and knowledge go hand in hand.
