God: Though to be honest, mankind is living in a nether region between Heaven and Hell, closer to Hell but heading for Heaven. Hell is where nature is brutal, disasters kill tens of thousands of you, predators kill you, you kill yourselves, you exploit each other. It's the worst of life and what most of you fear. The worst thing about hell is you realize you're no different than the ants you trod underfoot. You realize you are expendable and die by your millions, lost and forgotten.
Heaven on the other hand is where you are heading with your knowledge and hope. Where you leave your predatory nature behind, where you can protect yourself from natural disasters and disease, where you truly evolve into a better species. But you're not quite there yet. Most people have their eye on heaven, but they're aware of Hell at their backs and each decade you gain a little ground or you may lose a little ground, but humanity has made a definite decision to head for heaven.
Me: Is that what religion is all about, a metaphor for that struggle?
God: Exactly, and it's why God resides in heaven. And it's why life can be so very confusing to so many people because they want to believe in Heaven, they glimpse it all around in the achievements of mankind, but they can also see Hell which resides all around you too. Both existing at the same time, and each person must decide which path they're on.
Me: Do angels exist?
God: You are the angels.
Me: We are?
God: Residing among you are the destroyers and the creators. The destroyers are the people who bring nothing to life, they live off others, they destroy things, they are so caught up in their own fear of hell that they embrace it and live it and try and drag others down to it. The creators are those who build, who make and grow, who create all the amazing things in human culture, they are the ones who give, and help others. You all have a little bit of both in you and often spend your lives going back and forth between the two.
Many people however simply drift, they never chose a path but live between the struggle of the creators and the destroyers. And both creators and destroyers leave their imprint behind them when they die, it is why you still hear of Hitler and Ghandi, both their spirits live on and angels are a metaphor for that.
Me: Sounds a little fanciful.
God: Fanciful? No, it's just easy for you to take things for granted. To see the amazing buildings and social systems you have created, the art, the knowledge, the science, even the religions you've created. To anyone seeing them for the first time they can be truly amazing and inspiring. It's also easy to take the hard things of life for granted and think that's all life is. Life is not one thing or another, it is what you chose to see, it is what you chose to live.
