Me: Wow, eight o'clock already.
God: Time for me to go I think.
Me: I meant to ask if you had any questions for me. Though how could you, the guy who knows everything.
(God paused and smiled. His eyes sparkled in the evening light.)
God: I have one question. Now do you believe in God?
(I hesitated a long time before answering this. I could feel all my beliefs and feelings, hopes and despairs crumbling down around my feet.)
Me: Well, if what you've said is true, and you are our future, that means do I believe in myself, in people...so yes, I guess I do. Do you believe in people?
God: Without any qualifications or reservations, yes I do, absolutely.
The room suddenly felt empty and lonely. I looked at the chair and he simply wasn’t there, almost as if he’d never existed. I played back the taperecorder to make sure I hadn’t just imagined the entire thing and there was his voice, so calm, so sure. I couldn’t do anything for the next few days. I didn’t return phone calls, didn’t eat much. I just walked around and enjoyed each day and tried to hold on to that feeling of peace and life that I’d felt with him.
But all things must pass. The good is taken with the understanding there is also bad. I finally sat down and began to transcribe these interviews. I know it sounds corny but I laughed and I cried as I typed them. And then I uploaded some of them here. You will make of them as you will.
The funny thing is, God was right, I know you will believe what you want to believe and it doesn’t matter what God said. Christians will prefer to believe in a bible that can be translated in a way so it supports what they want to believe, atheists will choose to believe this is just a work of fiction, God could sit in their livingrooms and they’d still figure out a way to deny it.
People choose to believe different things and that's all right. It can cause great suffering but it is what we are as a species. We need our differences, I understand that now.
I certainly feel blessed in a non-religious way. What little time I have left with this brief spark of consciousness, well, I’m going to try and appreciate people more and I’ll try to understand a little more about myself, so I can become a little closer to God.
