God: What happens to you when you go to sleep at night?
Me: We dream.
God: Not always.
Me: You’re saying death is like sleep?
God: Each night you go to bed you cease to exist in this life as you know it. It’s only in the morning when you wake up that you continue from where you left off. Life for humans is consciousness.
Me: So why do we fear death?
God: Because that’s what humans do. You imagine the worst, you think about pain and sickness, age and debility, which do indeed go along with most death. You also mourn the loss of others. But those are all just the wrappings, death itself is no different than going to sleep. So don’t fear death, fear the wrappings of death.
Me: And the wrappings can be changed?
God: Of course, death can be wrapped any way you choose. It has been before. Death was a celebration, the beginning of a new journey, a trip to the gods.
Me: Well why the hell have we made death out to be such a horror?
God: Lack of knowledge, the Christian work ethic.
Me: So there is life after death?
God: The pattern that is you has been indelibly marked upon the universe.
Me: But I want my consciousness to go on!
God: You think you do. But trust me, immortality is a pipe dream. Your generation has to make way for the next. Humanity needs new ideas to continue and you’d just be hanging around with your old ideas.
Me: I could change!
God: You could, but you wouldn’t. You’d be trying to impose what you believe on others. Knowledge requires growth and change. People don't like to change as they get older. So we’re talking stasis, and trust me, if you lived any longer than you do, you’d be miserable.
Me: Some people seem happy to live to be a hundred.
God: Try a thousand. And remember this is a fanstasy of the wealthy. Because everyone else would be stuck in their same old jobs for a thousand years to pay the rent.
Me: But I thought our society was going to change rent, money will become meaningless, and our concept of time would become a thing of the past.
God: Yes, that's coming but not for a long while. Till then you need to get out of the way for future generations. This is your time of consciousness, enjoy it while you have it.
Me: So death, why can’t we just take a pill when our time comes. Society has made suicide out to be a great evil.
God: The wrappings of death.
Me: Wow, I wasn’t expecting that from you. You’re saying suicide is okay?
God: You eat a lot of junk food?
Me: Sometimes.
God: You know it’s taking years of your life. Being overweight, smoking, drinking your lives are filled with risky behaviours that you know are shortening your lives and yet you seem to think that’s fine. But when someone has the courage to end their life suddenly, for concrete reasons, it’s wrong?
Me: But many people commit suicide because they’re depressed, they shouldn’t be making decisions like that.
(God actually gives a hearty laugh here.)
God: You often eat junk food, and smoke, and all these other things because you’re depressed too, that doesn’t seem to stop you?
Me: So I just want to be absolutely clear on this, you think suicide is all right?
God: Every person's death is different. A middle-aged man living alone in poor health and poverty and who has no hope for the future. Why should he struggle on? Simply to fulfill someone else's fear about death, or because it attacks the western world's fantasy of eternal hope. I see a person like that who commits suicide as both brave and noble and I condemn any person who tries to stop him.
Understand this, everyone knows when their time has come, they feel it in their bones and that is the time they should embrace death and move on. Instead, your society has grown so terrified of death, and so selfish in its possession of others, that you force everyone to live as long as they can.
Death is as great a gift as life. Do not steal that away from others who simply have the courage to face it sooner than these others who desperately try to wring every last second of life because they are terrified to die. People who inflict their fears on others, often disguised as "hope" make this world into a living hell for others.
Me: I've not seen you so impassioned before.
God: It angers me those who meddle in other people's lives. That is a true sin.
Me: Will people who commit suicide go to hell?
God: I rule over no heaven and there is no hell, those are creations of mankind. Everyone is equal when they die and begin the next journey in exactly the same way. It's comforting for some people to think that bad people are punished in hell, but that is just not how it works.
Me: Well, we're really getting to the guts of things now. I still need to go back to my original question. Is there life after death? Do we “wake up” somewhere else?
God: No, this momentary awareness of yourself that you call life ceases to exist. But you will be reborn into a million new patterns over the coming ages that you will not be aware of but that you will exist in.
Me: So we die.
God: What’s it like having such a painfully small perception of the reality you’re living in?
Me: It’s kind of depressing.

Me: But I have a lot more questions.
God: This is the problem with talking to God, I can’t always give you the answers you want to hear.
Me: That evangelist who cheated on his wife, did you really forgive him?
God: Forgive him? Only his wife can forgive him, or the followers he mislead, he didn't do anything to me.

God: People create their own truths. If he believes I forgave him then that's what he believes.
