Many years ago I remember watching televison and listening to an evangelical minister confessing that he had cheated on his wife. He concluded by saying that he had made his peace with God and knew he was forgiven.
This struck me as rather convenient, that Christians can do any number of sins but always be forgiven for them. More importantly many Christians seemed to speak to God directly, or at the very least have their lives guided by him/her.
I began to wonder if God would speak to an atheist? I couldn’t see why not. I mean if he exists then we are all God’s children, right? So why wouldn’t he talk to a sinner? Because frankly, I had a lot of questions I would like answered.
So I set up a series of interviews in my living room.
This is the room where the interviews took place.
I thought God would prefer the big leather chair so I sat on the couch. I made a pot of tea, put out some milk, sugar and a few biscuits, then each day at 4 PM I requested an interview out loud and spent a few minutes praying in my head to meet him.
For seven days (is there a biblical signfigance there?) nothing happened. I began to wonder if indeed God would talk to a guy like me and I had almost given up hope, but on the 8th day, IT HAPPENED.
It was 4:27 PM and the entire room began to feel alive and simply filled with a holy energy. Then I saw him, he was sitting in the leather chair. The strange thing was he didn’t suddenly appear, or fade in, it was as if he had always been sitting there. A confusing mixture of emotions washed over me: joy, sorrow, peace. To be honest the emotions were almost unbearable they were so intense, but slowly I adjusted and got my first really good look at "him".
I don’t want anyone to take this the wrong way but he looked just like me. I suppose I should have been expecting that since we’re made in his image, right? He maybe looked a little younger, healthier, and all the emotions I had just felt were etched permanently across his face. His eyes were amazing, they engulfed you. He didn’t talk at first but simply started pouring us both some tea. He knew exactly how I liked it and he placed a cup on the footstool before me and smiled.
My professional demeanor had deserted me and I was feeling quite flustered so I turned to my list of questions and tried to focus. I switched on my tape recorder and what follows is our conversation. We spoke for many hours and I couldn't put it all up here but will work at doing so over the next few months. Just to note, I did do some editing of his replies where the sound was garbled, or where I removed some repetition to preserve clarity.
